Balancing act: Neil Driver negotiates a rope bridge at the financially challenged Camp
Lonsdale Outdoor Education Centre.

dale near Kaeo may require a leap of
But it s hard to fault the camp s suit-
ability as an outdoor education centre

So why aren t schools queuing to
book the reasonably-priced facilities
that include dining, kitchen and laun-
dry blocks and bunkhouse accommo-
dation for 66 people?
That s the dilemma causing anguish
for members of the non-profit trust
that runs the Education Ministry-
owned camp 2km from SH10 on
Matauri Bay Rd.
Thousands of Northland school chil-
dren have stayed at the camp since it
was gifted to the region by Henry Wil-
liam Driver and his wife Ellen Lons-
dale Driver in 1962.
But bookings have been falling for
years, according to the Drivers grand-
son Neil who owns a dairy farm sur-
rounding the camp and is chairman of
the Lonsdale Park Camp Board.
It s pretty dead here during terms
two and three, Mr Driver says.
The trust relies on revenue from
bookings to offset costs and needs
year-round occupancy for the camp to
be financially viable.
Most of the upkeep is done by ser-
vice clubs and board members but we

Mr Driver hopes a new website
www.lonsdale park.org.nz and a
listing on an online register of outdoor
education centres will boost bookings.
Because we re not on it, people
assume we no longer exist.
He asks schools, sports clubs and
interest groups to support Lonsdale by
holding their next camp or conference
at the camp which charges $3 to $6 a
night for children and $15 for adults.
We re pretty much the cheapest
camp in Northland.
