New Zealand's inline
skating community may
be small but two young
athletes are determined
to make their mark on
the international stage.
Alex Lewis, 13, and
Nathanael Oh, 15, have
been selected for the
New Zealand squad that
will compete in the
Oceania Speed Skating
Brisbane in April.
It will be the first
tition for the two
students and they are
already excited about the
Lewis is the youngest
team member and will
compete in the junior
section while Oh will
take part in the inter-
Oh is fairly new to the
sport, having skated for
only two years, but is
confident they will do
well at the tournament.

ciplines, speed skating is
more of a team sport
than it appears.

can to get one teammate
to the front of the pack
rather than simply look-
ing out for themselves.
Lewis settled on inline
speed skating five years
ago after deciding roller
hockey was not for him.
He loves the speed but
says there is more to it
It's quite a graceful
sport,'' he says.
The boys, both
members of Mt Welling-
ton Inline Speed, have
big goals for the future
and are already planning
for next year's Oceania
I definitely want to
get better than what I
am and hopefully maybe
get placings next time,''
Lewis is well aware
the sport will provide
him with plenty of
opportunities to travel.
I'll just train, get bet-
ter, go to different places
and skate,'' he says.
speed skater Scott
Arlidge says the compe-
tition will be invaluable
for the boys.
Arlidge, who is now
based in Germany, has
been skating for 22 years
and is based at the Auck-
land club when he is at
It's the next level in
They are still rela-
tively new in the sport.''
His advice for the
young skaters is to enjoy
Zealand is always a big
deal -- it doesn't matter if
it's in Tiddlywinks or the
All Blacks,'' Arlidge says.
