Whether it be the Hop Card, the
Waka Card, the Trip Snapper
or Mako -- a highly anticipated
integrated ticketing system is
coming to Auckland.
Auckland Transport is plan-
ning an awareness campaign
this month for the single-ticket
system which would allow
access on buses, trains and fer-
ries. The launch is planned for
The card will be available
initially on NZ Bus services
which include North Star,
Waka Pacific, Metrolink, Link
and Go West buses, and Hop
Card has been tipped as the
likely name for the system.
The Campaign For Better
Transport has launched a nam-
ing forum on its website for the
card and so far Mako has 15
votes, Waka Card has three and
Trip Snapper has one.
The single card system is part
of the Auckland Integrated
Fares System and the second
stage will be introduced as a
tourist product for the Rugby
World Cup in September.
Supercity mayor Len Brown
says the progress is a signifi-
cant step towards improving
public transport in Auckland
and making it easier to move
around the city.
It s vital that our buses, fer-
ries and trains are well linked if
our public transport system is
to be as effective as it needs to
Auckland Transport external
communications manager Sha-
ron Hunter says the card will
have a capital cost of $6.4
million and a marketing cam-
paign will cost about $1m.
A participation agreement
has been signed between Auck-
land Transport, NZ Bus and
Snapper Services, which
operates a ticketing system in
Auckland Transport chief
executive David Warburton
says the agreement will sup-
plement a contract signed last
year with French electronics
company Thales, in partnership
with the Bank of New Zealand
and Transfield services, to pro-
vide the system.
will be deployed on to services
run by NZ Bus this year. We
will be following the deploy-
ment of equipment with the
expansion of integrated ticket-
ing on rail and ferry services.
We expect the timing for this to
be in the lead-up to the Rugby
Thales New Zealand country
director Peter Beggs says the
core ticketing system is based
on one used in Dubai and the
Netherlands and enables third
parties to connect to Auckland
Transport s central system.
The system is expected to be
up and running in its entirety
by June next year.
