Doctor rises to challenge
By SARAH MOYES
Improving patient care is the
number one priority for the man
in charge of two Auckland health
Waitemata District Health
Board chairman Lester Levy was
appointed chairman of the Auck-
land District Health Board in
He s taken on the dual roles in
the hope that both boards can
work together to give patients the
best possible care.
Each board will be run separ-
ately and will come together when
We are taking down the bound-
aries and looking at the two
together to see what can be done
by working together.
The boards have a combined
revenue approaching $3 billion
and employ 15,500 staff.
One of the major areas Dr Levy
wants to address is patient care,
or lack thereof, particularly in
Waitemata s services.
He says there are significant
performance issues there, which
result in patients not always get-
ting the care they need and
Patients are sometimes treated
like they don t matter very much.
He encourages staff to treat
everyone they deal with as if they
are the person they care the most
about in their own lives.
Dr Levy came to New Zealand
from South Africa 32 years ago.
In this time he s worked for a
number of health organisations.
He has plans to modernise both
boards, with updated technology
and refreshed attitudes.
The world s changing and we
need to respond to it.
He says demographics are
changing, and the health system
needs to adjust to it.
People are living longer and
are going to be living even longer.
Dementia, hip replacements
and cataracts will be more com-
mon as the population ages.
A lot of these things can be
treated. They require a lot of care
He says action needs to be
taken in terms of aged care facili-
ties and ways of keeping people
If you get it right you can
change their lives dramatically.
