Salute to the fallen
ANZAC DAY is important for Malcolm Harvey-Williams.
The Hobsonville RSA member served in the airforce for 23 years.
On April 25 he'll be remembering New Zealanders killed at war and honouring
returned servicemen and women.
"To me it's always been about commemorating those who gave their lives for the
country,'' he says.
The Whenuapai resident gets up at 4am on every Anzac Day and goes to Parakai
for a dawn parade.
He then makes his way to the Riverhead RSA for another service before heading
to the Hobsonville RSA for the parade which starts at 10.30am.
Mr Harvey-Williams says the number of young people at Anzac commemorations
each year continues to grow.
"I think the interest has increased,'' he says. ``Ours seems to be getting bigger
"The younger generation has been made more aware of it. I think it's important
that the young ones realise what was done for them.
"These people gave their lives for the freedom we've got today.''
Mr Harvey-Williams joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force as an engine fitter
It wasn't long until he was heading overseas.
He was deployed to Tengah in Singapore in 1959 to work on RNZAF No 75
squadron's B2 Canberra bombers during the Malayan Emergency.
The conflict, which took place between 1948 and 1960, was a result of the Malayan Communist Party's attempt to
overthrow the country's British colonial administration.
The 71-year-old Whenuapai resident returned to New Zealand in September 1960 and went on to serve aboard the
HMNZS Waikato servicing RNZAF No 3 Squadron's Westland Wasp helicopters.
Today he is a member of the New Zealand Malayan Veterans Association.
He says it's a good way to catch up with old friends and talk about their time in south-east Asia.
"We have a reunion every two years."
