Big dreams: Table tennis player Ayush Bhatnagar hopes
to make it to the 2016 Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Rio de Janeiro is a long
way from Mt Roskill, but
not for table tennis
player Ayush Bhatnagar.
Ayush, 17, is one of
this year s recipients of a
Gold Heart Scholarship
from Variety -- the
Children s Charity.
Each year the charity
awards 20 scholarships
to talented Kiwi kids
who already excel in
arts, sports or education,
but have had to over-
come personal challenges
to achieve their success.
At the age of 10 Ayush
was diagnosed with con-
genital myopathy, which
he explains is a muscle
condition which makes it
difficult to move and can
affect his accuracy.
After starting to play
the sport competitively
two years ago, the Mt
Roskill Grammar School
student has competed in
both able bodied and dis-
abled table tennis
tournaments with much

It s not like wrestling.
You don t have to move
much, you can use your
technique to win and
even if you re standing
still you can do quite
well, he says.
As part of the scholar-
ship Ayush will also
have a mentor to help
him achieve his goals.
Next year he plans to
make a trip to the
Chinese National Table
Tennis Training Center
in Shijiazhuang, but his
ultimate goal is to com-
pete in the 2016
Paralympics in Rio de
Janeiro and says the
$2500 scholarship will go
a long way towards get-
ting him there.
Ayush s mother Vimmi
thinks her son s success
should encourage other
parents to get involved
with their children.
It just shows what
giving proper love, focus
and attention to your
children can achieve,
Ayush and Mrs
Bhatnagar are thankful
for the help and support
Ayush has been given by
the staff at his school.
