RACING V8 driver Malcolm Finch is
hoping to give some of the country's
best racers a run for their money at
the ITM 400 Auckland V8 Supercars
event this weekend.
The 22-year-old and his team of fel-
low Auckland University mechanical
engineering students are heading to
the Pukekohe Park Raceway for their
third tilt at the V8 Challenge Cup.
The high-profile race has attracted
a big entry of almost 30 NZV8s,
including three-times national cham-
pion John McIntyre.
McIntyre will be racing the Falcon
that took him to his final NZV8 title
back in 2011.
Finch is hoping to place in the top
Considering the competition has
got a bit tougher because there's
quite a few big names who have come
back out and decided to run, I'll be
really happy with top 10,'' he says.
I get to race against these guys
and try and beat them. The worst
that can happen is I don't finish
where I want to but I learn a lot and
I'll get to follow them around and
learn their line.''
This will also stand him in good
stead for next month's round of the
Challenge Cup which will see him
return to Pukekohe with a better
knowledge of the revamped circuit
than those not competing this week-
Finch has built up years of racing
experience in the American Spec
Miata Championship and a season
with Formula First back on home soil
after winning the 2011 Speedsport

careers of many world-class drivers

Finch comes from good racing
His father Mike Finch won the
New Zealand Formula Ford Cham-
pionship in 1979 and had his son fol-
low him on to the track when he was
But the young driver wasn't
entirely sold on the sport until about
five years ago when he decided to
take things up a gear to one day
reach his goal of racing with the V8
His support team puts in about 100
hours of work for every hour of actual
race time and Finch spends any spare
moments searching for sponsors.
NZV8 series co-ordinator David
Slater sees good reasons for the influx
of young drivers into the champion-
It is the top championship
category and it is a stepping stone to
V8 Supercars,'' he says.
People are realising that they are
not too expensive to run and they are
not too expensive to buy now either.''
The NZV8 qualifier takes place on
Friday at 4.15pm before the action
kicks off on Saturday for the first race
of the round at noon.
