Have you ever wondered if donat-
ing money to help a needy child
does any good?
Former sponsored child Lillian
Nakabiri will tell you it does.
She can remember the point in
her life when her Australian spon-
sor's letters saved her life.
When she was 16 things got so

It was too much; I was home-

sadness. When I was about to
commit suicide I remembered I
had so many letters from my

When her stepsisters threw her

Although she was a sponsored
child, the leaders of the local Com-
passion Project were unaware of
her situation. Compassion Inter-
national is a partner of TEAR
Fund, which is the charity that
has brought her to New Zealand.
When she decided to seek help
the church pastor took her in and
arranged counselling for her.
Compassion International takes
care of the holistic needs of the
child, Miss Nakabiri says.
Sponsorship ensures the child
is healthy, warm, fed and able to
attend school and church.
Children who are sponsored are
offered remedial classes and are
taught practical skills which they
can use to earn money.
Because of the sponsorship she
received, she was able to complete
a bachelor of mass communi-
cations in 2006.
Alongside this she took part in

If you help one child, you
change one world,'' she says.
In the future she would like to
create a project to help Ugandan
women become more independent.
I'd like to help women open
small scale businesses. You want
to help everyone but you cannot.
But if you help one she can be an
example to others.''
