Weather upsets play
By JEREMY RUANE
Club football teams will be hoping
the weather clears up for this
weekend's fixtures after the
effects of stormy conditions meant
five teams were unable to take to
the field last weekend.
Mt Albert-Ponsonby and West-
ern Springs were both sidelined
by a combination of rearranged
ASB Chatham Cup ties or ground
unavailability on Saturday so just
seven central Auckland sides were
in action over the weekend.
The lone First Division match of
the weekend saw Metro hold East-
ern Suburbs to a 2-2 draw at Albie
Turner Field on Friday night.
Chris Gage got the home team
back on terms in the first spell
while The Lilywhites'' put
through their own net in the sec-
ond half to earn Metro a point.
Metro are at home again this
Friday this time entertaining For-
rest Hill-Milford United.
Meanwhile Mt Albert-Ponsonby
will entertain bottom-placed
North Force at Anderson Park on
The Second Division's Western
Springs will entertain Lynn-Avon
from 5pm on Saturday at Seddon
In the Lotto Northern Premier
Women's League, Western
Springs had hard luck at Bay of
Plenty going down 3-2 after lead-
ing at halftime through a Ruby
Kleyer goal. Kate Searle scored a
second half equaliser for The
Hoops'' but Bay of Plenty bagged
the winner four minutes from
time. Western Springs will wel-
come Pukekohe to Seddon Fields
on Sunday for the ASB National
Women's Knockout Cup.

The Mt Albert Lions and Pt
Chevalier Pirates are sitting at
first and second place respectively
on rugby league's Appliance Shed
Fox Memorial Shield table after
round 13 of the competition.
The Roope Rooster clash was
always going to be one of the
titans of the round and the fact
that the weather left the grounds
a little soggy was to be the telling
of both sides.
This game was definitely not
one to disappoint with a halftime
score of 12--10 to Mt Albert not
enough to hold on to the Roope
with 40 minutes remaining.
The battle continued and the
Pirates did not lay down with
their try scorers coming from
Gary Fuimaono, Ian Hayes, Gary
Saifoloi, Arden McCarthy, Patrick
Sipley and Jonathan Carl conver-
sions. But in the end Mt Albert
took the win and retain the
